Visionary vs. Integrator: What Kind of Leader Are You — and Who Do You Need?
If you’re constantly coming up with ideas but struggle to follow through — or if you love operations but wish someone else could drive strategy — you might be caught in the visionary/integrator divide.
These are terms popularized by Gino Wickman’s Traction, but they show up everywhere in leadership:
The Visionary is big-picture. Creative. Future-focused. They’re the spark.
The Integrator is grounded. Operational. Detail-oriented. They’re the engine.

Many practice owners are natural visionaries: you started your practice with a mission. You saw a gap in the system. You wanted to create something better. But as your team and impact grow, the need for integration becomes clearer. And more urgent.
The problem? You can't do both well, all the time.
Ugh, I know — most business owners seem to have the jack-of-all-trades, ultimate DIYer gene, but alas — you just can’t do it all. At least very well.
You’re going to need backup.
An integrator (or fractional practice manager) doesn’t just “organize things.” They take your vision and translate it into structure. They manage projects, delegate tasks, track timelines, and ensure your team has what they need to move forward.
This isn’t about being more like someone else or pushing yourself to do everything on your own. It’s about honoring your leadership style — and surrounding yourself with people who balance it.
If you’ve been feeling stuck, scattered, or spinning, it might not mean you’re failing. It might just mean you’re missing your integrator.
Want to find more ease in your role as a visionary? Let’s talk about what kind of integrator support could change the game.
